Ten Reasons Why Sailing Turkey Is Better Than Sailing Anywhere Else on The Mediterranean
We are not going to lie. Sailing in Greece and Sailing in Croatia is pretty awesome. Sailing in Spain and Sailing along the French and Italian Riviera is also pretty cool but you’re going to need a lot of cash for those destinations not to mention a few seasick pills. I’m here to tell you why sailing Turkey tops all other destinations in the Mediterranean Sea.
.The price – Hands down sailing in Turkey is going to get you the best value for your money over anywhere else on the med. The value of the Turkish Lira works strongly in your favour but in general, the Turkish Riviera is just a much cheaper and better value destination than other seaside destinations in Europe.
.The Service – It’s a little known fact that service levels are of a very high standard in Turkey. They take service very seriously and it shows. You’ll be super impressed at the high quality you will receive especially compared to the price you are paying. Everyone loves five-star service for a two-star price right??!!
.The season – Thanks to the southerly location of Turkey the season is longer than elsewhere in Europe. The weather is warmer for longer periods of time. That means if you love it super hot you can travel to Turkey in July and August but if you like it slightly cooler yet still lovely and warm you can travel in the lower seasons. That means even cheaper prices and fewer people but it still feels like summer for 8 months of the year. Fethiye experiences over 300 days of sunshine annually.
.The sea – For some meteorological reason, the sea is calm in this part of the Mediterranean. At night when we have the anchor down, you may not be able to believe you’re on a boat in a bay as it’s that still and flat. The calmness of the sea is cool but did I mention the colour and the temperature. Did you know the word Turquoise comes from the absolutely divine colour that is the colour of the sea in Turkey? The water is crystal clear, warm but still refreshing and the most mesmerising shades of turquoise and blue you’ll ever see in your life.
.The people – The Turkish people are some of the friendliest, warmest and most welcoming people on the planet. They are incredibly proud of their nation and they naturally want to leave you with a lasting impression and a reason to return time and time again. Their hospitality is world-class. Need I say more?
.The food – As a life long foodie, this is my absolute favourite reason to visit Turkey. They simply have THE BEST FOOD. Whether you like seafood, BBQ meats, grilled veggies, all of the kebabs and cheeses, pizza (Turkish of course) or vegetarian mezzes and homemade sauces There is something in Turkish cuisine for everyone. They use seasonal, regional, local and often organic produce in all their dishes. I’ve never met anyone that doesn’t absolutely love the variety, the freshness and the delicious flavours that are Turkish cuisine. There is truly something for everyone and your taste buds will be dancing with delight.
.The scenery – Many destinations in Turkey are still not quite as well known as some of their European counterparts. That means that during your sailing week you will discover ancient ruins that you may never have even heard of before. There are hiking trails, secret swimming spots, Turkish baths, ancient archeological sites, and spectacular views and that’s just in the sailing region of Fethiye. If you want to see even more of this very special and diverse country you could stay a while longer either before or after your sailing week and discover the variety of delights that Turkey has to offer. There is the vibrant, cosmopolitan megacity of Istanbul. The city that spans two continents and literally never sleeps. There are the amazing landscapes of the Cappadocia region, the history of the capital Ankara and Gallipoli, and the extremely well preserved ancient sites of Ephesus, Hierapolis, and Pergamon. The calcium terraces at Pamukkale and the wooden horse at Troy, just to name a few of the many reasons you should spend longer in Turkey than just your sailing week.
.The shopping – The Turks invented the grand bazaar. Because of the central location of Turkey spanning the continents of Asia and Europe, you can buy almost anything in Turkey and if you can’t find it, you can guarantee someone will source it or make it for you. If you’re a keen shopper and you love a bargain then Turkey is your nirvana.
.The entertainment – There are so many places to dine, seafood markets, alfresco barbecue restaurants, beach clubs, and shisha bars. The music in Turkey is also diverse and you’ll get the best of both western and oriental beats combined together to create splendid often mystical melodies and tunes that you’ll just want to kick back and listen to while you sip on the cocktail and watch the sunset over the horizon.
.The location – Turkey is one of only a few country’s in the world that spans two continents you can cross a bridge from Asia to Europe in less than 3 minutes. How novel is that!! It also means that Turkey is accessible from all over the world. Istanbul airport is one of the world's biggest and with over 33 international airports you should be able to get there easily so go on what are you waiting for.
