Your personal sailing assistant

Know before
you go.

Tomorrow at six, or wait a day? Ava checks every hour of your passage against your boat and your limits, then tells you plainly.

Free while in testing. Every warning and the anchor watch, always free.

1The evening before

Stop doing weather homework.

Five forecasts open, a tide table, the pilot book, a notebook full of arithmetic, and still a guess at the end. Ava reads it all, hour by hour, for your boat. You read one answer and its reasons.

What is your weather homework costing you?

34hours

back in your year, to spend on the water instead of on a screen. Plus a Daily Brief every morning at anchor, already done for you.

Your own numbers, set above. It assumes about two minutes to read Ava's answer and its reasons.

2Passage plan

Your limits. Your answer.

Everyone's comfortable is different. Set what you and your crew are happy with, and Ava checks every hour of the passage against it, across three forecast models, never a single run. Try it: move your limits.

Ava's answer
Go with caution
    • Motorsailing is a mode of its own. Ava knows when the engine helps and when it pays to sail, and counts the engine hours and the fuel.
    • Passes, light and tides. When you clear the pass, when you arrive, and whether that is in daylight.
    • Multi-stop trips. Chain the hops of a week of island hopping and see each leg's answer at a glance.
    3Departure finder

Find the window, not the weather.

A week of departure times, scored for your boat. Pick what matters on this trip and Ava finds the best time to leave, with how sure the forecast is, in plain words.

    • Most comfortable, most sailing, fastest, or arriving in daylight.
    • Passage alerts. Save the search and Ava tells you when a window opens, or when the best one moves.

    4Daily Brief

Coffee in one hand. Everything you need in the other.

Your morning check, wherever you are anchored. One screen, already read for you.

    • Wind, rain, thunderstorms, swell, tides and pressure for the spot you are swinging on.
    • A warning before the anchorage opens up to a wind shift or a new swell, and where to move.
    • Storm-aware all year. A tracked tropical storm near your route means Do not go, in season or out of it.
    • Who to listen to for cyclone and tsunami warnings, wherever you are.
Ava's Daily Brief: a gust watch for tomorrow morning, cyclone season notes, local rules, and wind and wind-shift tiles
    5Anchor watch

    Sleep through the night.

An alarm if you drag or lose GPS, even with the screen off and the phone in your bunk. Ava tracks your swing, and warns you when a boat nearby starts dragging toward you.

    • Free, for everyone, always. No warning is ever behind a paywall.
    • Boats nearby. See the swing circles around you. When one boat drags, the boats sharing around it hear.
    • Your instruments on watch. Readings from the boat, with alarms on the anchor watch.

    One assistant. Your whole boat.

Ava is not another island of data. It listens to your boat, knows your boat, learns from your passages, and keeps the whole anchorage looking out for each other.

    Your instruments

Wind, depth and speed, live over the boat's Wi-Fi.

    Your batteries

Charge and state of your batteries, live from your battery monitor.

    Your boat, known

Over 500 cruising boats, every figure sourced and the draft never guessed. Then Ava learns your real speeds from your own passages.

    Ava

Plans, the Daily Brief and the anchor watch, all drawing on the same picture of your boat.

    Boats nearby

Shared swing circles in the anchorage. When one boat drags, the boats around it hear.

    Your log

Entries on a timer, your track, engine and sailing time. Share it as a spreadsheet, GPX or KML.

    Local knowledge

Passes, anchorages and local rules that update without a new app version, and improve every time a sailor says what they found.

    7Where it works

    Anywhere you can float.

Weather-checked offshore plans, the Daily Brief and the anchor watch work everywhere. Beyond the forecast, a long-range outlook from past seasons, clearly labelled. And on the classic cruising grounds, Ava goes deeper.

    Reef maps and passes

The way in and out of the lagoon, and when the pass is safe to take.

    Anchorages that fit the wind

Which way each one is open, and where to move when the wind shifts.

    Local rules

Clearing in, protected areas, emergency numbers and who to call.

    8Honest by design

It says when it doesn't know.

Ava never pretends to know more than the forecast does. Every Go, Go with caution or Do not go says what it rests on and how sure it is. When the data is thin, it tells you, instead of guessing.

    What Ava is not

Ava is a planning aid. It is not a chart and does not replace official forecasts, pilot books, local knowledge or the person on the bow. Keep your charts, your judgement and a proper watch.

    Models agree

Models agree within 10% on wave height.

    estimated speeds

Boat speeds are estimated for a catamaran of this length, not yet measured on yours. Log a passage and Ava learns.

Not yet confirmed by a local

Anchorage position from a published source, not yet checked on the water. After you sail, Ava asks whether it was right.

    typical conditions

Past day five the forecast thins out, so Ava switches to what past seasons looked like, and says so.

    A look inside

Calm, clear, and quick to read.

Ava is Tahitian for the pass through the reef: where the lagoon ends and the ocean begins.

Ava was built at anchor and tested on passage, aboard a cruising catamaran in French Polynesia, by a sailing family who wanted one honest answer before every hop. Its French Polynesian places come from our own passages.

    Questions sailors ask

    Is Ava free?

Ava is free while it is in testing: every feature is open. Every warning and the anchor watch will always stay free.

What kind of boats is it for?

Cruising monohulls and catamarans, under sail, under engine, or motorsailing, which Ava treats as a mode of its own. Pick your model from over 500 cruising boats, or set your own figures, and Ava learns your boat's real speeds from your passages.

    Does it work offline?

Plans, the Daily Brief and the anchor watch you already have keep working. New forecasts need a connection.

    Where does it work?

Anywhere for offshore plans, the Daily Brief and the anchor watch. In-depth regions, with reef maps, passes, anchorages and local rules: French Polynesia, Fiji, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Niue, Northland in New Zealand, the Lesser Antilles from the Virgin Islands to Trinidad, and the Balearic Islands.

Where does the weather come from?

Three global weather models, plus marine and tide models, read hour by hour. Cyclone warnings come from the regional warning centres named in the Daily Brief. Ava shows where the models agree and where they do not.

    Can I navigate with it?

No. Ava is a planning aid, not a chart. Keep your charts, your own judgement and a proper watch.

    Which phones?

Android phones and tablets now, in testing with the Wayfinders. iPhone is on its way. Ava is coming to Google Play and the App Store.
